Technical Paper: "Developing HTML Help with Visual Basic and VBA"

As HTML Help grows in popularity, so has the need to incorporate it into Visual Basic and VBA applications. It's no secret that Visual Basic is one of the most widely used programming languages on the planet. Couple this fact with the wide use of the Visual Basic Applications edition (VBA), not only in MIcrosoft Office applications but also licensed by independent software vendors, and the installed developer base becomes considerably larger. Even more, developers still program with a number of versions of Visual Basic and VBA. On the 32-bit side, for example, developers use the 32-bit edition of Visual Basic 4 (which also shipped with a 16-bit version), Visual Basic 5 and 6, as well as Office 95, 97, and 2000.

This document covers such subjects as:

  • Connecting to the API
  • Visual Basic considerations for HTML help
  • The development of a Visual Basic HTML Help class module
  • What's This Help from HTML Help
  • Embedded HTML Help
  • The HTML Help Object Library DLL
