Annual Kick-Off Meeting, Society for Technical Communication, Philadelphia Metro Chapter - September 19, DoubleTree Plymouth Meeting, 6 p.m. Subject: "The Return (Again) of Content: What Does 'Content is King' Mean for Technical Communicators?" You've now doubt heard the proclamation by now: "Content is king." While it's hardly news to technical communicators that good content is crucial to a product's success, what is new is that it isn't just us spreading the news. Everyone who is anyone in web and software development has gotten the message that communicating a product isn't just something you slap on at the end; it's critical to the architecture and usability of a saleable product. Does this mean that the world now understand the importance of our job? Does it mean that we'll become valued members of the product development team? Not necessarily, advises Cheri Lockett Zubak, speaker at the September meeting of the Philadelphia Metro chapter. We need to understand what the rest of the world means by good content, and be able to accept the technical and communication challenges that these differences can bring to our jobs. Cheri will take us on a tour of a variety of trends in web development, software interface design, and technical communication that are shaping how products are developed. She'll also talk about how you can capitalize on these trends to grow your career and your company's appreciation of your skills as a technical communicator. WinWriters Online Help Conference, Seattle, Washington - February 10-14, 2002. If you think it's a bit too early to be thinking about attending next year's WinWriters Online Help Conference, you should think again. The WinWriters conference is without a doubt the premier annual event for user assistance developers, particularly for those in the software industry. This conference always sells out well in advance of the registration deadline. WinWriters has moved the 2002 conference back to Seattle and is limiting the number of registrants, so don't wait to the last minute to register. Watch for details on the WinWriters website.
European Online Help Conference, London - June 9-12, 2002. Virtually every nation in Europe is represented at the conference. Delegates are even attracted from as far away as India and South Africa. The speaker roster features an international cast of characters and the sessions focus on European user assistance concerns. At this conference, Cheri will speak about information types, navigational design, and the future of help at Microsoft. She will also instruct a haf-day pre-conference session on Microsoft HTML Help 1.x.
